As I travel about I will be recording my thoughts and observations as semi-regular journal entries, blogs and instagram posts. I expect the subjects covered will be many and varied and in an attempt to classify my notes and photos into some sort of order I will be posting to one of the three channels noted below; so you can click on the links that are of most interest to you.
Travellers Tales will be a Log where I record the day to day highs and lows of life on the road;
Lighthouse Stories will be a catalogue of my and other peoples lighthouses stories, and
Thoughts of the Solo Traveller will be more introspective and collection of my personal thoughts and observations that I expect will come to the surface as I spend time alone and outside my comfort zone.
Point Lonsdale Lighthouse stands guard at the western entrance to Port Phillip Bay, positioned on the treacherous headland where the narrow passage known as “The Rip” meets the wild waters of Bass Strait. This cylindrical concrete tower, rising from the rocky outcrop of Point Lonsdale on the Bellarine Peninsula, has served as a crucial reference […]

The Queenscliff Lighthouses stand on the eastern edge of the Bellarine Peninsula in Victoria, guiding mariners through the narrow and treacherous passage known as “The Rip” at the entrance to Port Phillip Bay. Comprising the distinctive Black Lighthouse (High Light) and White Lighthouse (Low Light), these structures form a crucial navigational aid that has guided […]

The waters of Port Phillip Bay cover an area of 1,900 square kilometers and have one of Australia’s most comprehensive lighthouse networks. This network of lights, bells and buoys extending from the treacherous entrance at The Rip to the shifting sandbars and navigable channels leading to the commercial ports of Melbourne, Williamtown and Geelong tells […]

Where was I… In case anyone was wondering where I’ve been since my last post the answer is South America; more specifically Ecuador, Peru and Chile. The reason for this unplanned detour was that our daughter Lucy was turning 21 on 1st July and I wanted to be with her for this special birthday. Originally […]

Cape Wickham Lighthouse is Australia’s tallest at 48 metres and stands on the windswept northern tip of King Island where the Southern Ocean collides with treacherous reefs and fierce currents of Bass Strait. Since it was first light on January 1, 1863, it has served as a vital navigational aid, guiding mariners through one of […]

Table Cape Lighthouse stands at the edge of a spectacular circular headland, rising nearly 180 metres above the treacherous waters of Bass Strait. Located just five kilometres from the town of Wynyard on Tasmania’s northwest coast, this lighthouse has guided countless vessels through some of Australia’s most challenging maritime waters for over a century. The […]

Cape Sorell lighthouse stands on one of Tasmania’s most exposed and treacherous headlands, marking the entrance to Macquarie Harbour halfway up the rugged west coast. Perched on a low headland rising from the Southern Ocean, this lighthouse has guided vessels through some of Australia’s most dangerous waters for over a century, bearing witness to countless […]

Emerging from the Tarkine wilderness it was something of a shock to land in Stanley, a quaint seaside village in the shadow of a massive round headland, but there was something missing…people! Despite all the beautifully maintained victorian cottages and well kept gardens there was no sign of life. It reminded me of the Scottish […]

Join me as I travel around Australia using our historic lighthouses as my waypoints. While these will mark my route it is what happens between them that is as important as discovering the story behind each and every lighthouse.
In many ways this will be a voyage into the unknown, not only for the roads I will travel, the people I will meet and the stories I will discover, but also for the time spent alone.
It will be a new experience for me to be on my own, with no itinerary or timeline, taking each day as it comes and going wherever the urge takes me. By trusting fate and following my instincts I'll allow the road to take me where it will, and by being open to opportunity and adapting to circumstances I trust the journey will be just as interesting as the destinations.
