Lighthouses

There's something primal about lighthouses. Around the World and throughout the ages, these strange buildings have stood the test of time.

Like moths to a flame we seem to be drawn to them, whether we're sailors seeking safe harbour or curious landlubbers, they seem to exert and irresistible attraction to people of all ages and nationalities.

From the fabled Lighthouse at Alexandria, one of the Wonders of the Ancient World to the present day these pillars of light have stood at the very edges of the known World, or as gateways to new Worlds, with their flashing lights both a warning of impending doom or a beacon of hope and new beginnings.

And so it will be for me as I make my way around our coastline, our lighthouses will chart my course as I make my way through what for me will be largely unknown territory.

An Age Old Attraction:

Every lighthouse seems to have it's own unique story, often tragic, sometimes heroic and invariably interesting. As I travel from lighthouse to lighthouse I hope to uncover some of these stories and learn about the people and events they are synonymous with, and perhaps even unravel some of the mysteries that have often been lost in the sands of time.

I'd also invite you to share your lighthouse story's so they can be added to the archive I will be compiling as I visit each lighthouse. Please feel free to add your own lighthouse stories and photos by clicking on the "Your Lighthouse Stories" button below.
